As we write our book, we find out the development of China Internet is faster than we can record it into the book. An important purpose of this website is to record all the materials we have developed for our book but cannot put it into the printed version.

1) Chapter 13: Vancl: selling shirt online (online retailers in China)

After failing to turn Joyo (Amazon’s subsidiary in China) into a profitable business, chief operating officer Chen Nian started his own business in 2007.  Instead of the low-margin books, he is selling men’s shirt online under his own label Vancl,  at a much higher margin.  Chen claimed the quality of his shirts is the same as that of Hugo Boss,  as the products are from the same manufacturers.  But his prices is only of a faction of the German fashion chain for high end men’s wear.  Vancl’s sales reached US$28 one year after it started and is projected to be US$57-71 million in 2009.  Most industry insider believed the online store is closed to break even. 3) Appendix 3: Dialogue with Chinese Official

How Chinese government regulates its internet has always been puzzling to outsiders, and even to the industry players.  In this interview,  Kou Xiaowei, a key Chinese government official for online games, detailed how government regulates the internet industry and particularly the online game sector.  Why we are seeing more new rules in the recent years.  It follows from our discussion in Chapter Internet development: China’s conundrum. (coming soon)
